Have you ever heard of a repositioning cruise? You probably have seen the itineraries, but these cruises are rarely referred to by this title. Repositioning cruises are simply itineraries taking place while a ship is being moved from one location to another, usually due to changing seasons. Brand-new ships have repositioning cruises on their journey to their home port, some ships head to dry dock for maintenance, and some are relocated for a fresh set of itineraries in a new location.
Here are some characteristics of repositioning cruises:
Longer itineraries
Unique ports of call
One-Way Trips
Check out this repositioning cruise close to home! In May of 2027, The Carnival Sunshine will leave from Norfolk, VA and sail all the way to London on a 15-night Transatlantic Journey, with stops in:
🎣 Sydney, Nova Scotia
🐳 St. John's, Newfoundland
⚓ Grenock, Scotland
🚢 Belfast, Ireland (Home of the Titanic!)
☘️ Ringaskiddy, Ireland
💂 Concluding in London
The port at Norfolk is just a *5-hour drive* from home here in Yadkinville and you can hit ALL of these places on this cruise. AND right now, prices are starting at $989 (that's less than $66 a night)!
Carnival Sunshine will then travel from London to Barcelona on another repositioning cruise before spending her summer of 2027 in Barcelona and Rome!
A common reason that ships reposition is for seasonal itineraries.
Consider Princess Cruise Line's newest ship that debuted in October, 2025: Star Princess

Here is what she is up to for the next year:
May 17th-September 20th, 2026: Star Princess is doing Alaska cruises like this 7-Day Inside Passage (Roundtrip Seattle)
9/20/26: Star Princess does one 7-Day Inside Passage (Seattle to Vancouver) cruise
9/27/26: Star Princess Travels from Vancouver to Ft. Lauderdale (a 23-day cruise!)*
October 20th-March 27th, 2027 : Star Princess does various itineraries in the Caribbean, leaving from Ft. Lauderdale (Like this 7-Day Western Caribbean with Mexico trip)
4/3/27: Star Princess travels from Ft. Lauderdale to Los Angeles on a 16-Day Panama Canal- Ocean to Ocean cruise! This puts the ship in place for her summer in Alaska.*
These trips in bold are repositioning cruises. Star Princess is highly-anticipated for her Alaska itineraries, but ships cannot stay in Alaska year-round! Alaska cruises generally operate from May through September. Then, these ships head south and spend the winter hosting passengers in the Caribbean. Check out these repositioning cruises on Star Princess- both of them take you through the Panama Canal, a bucket-list experience for many cruisers. You can browse more of Princess' cruises here.
These are just two examples of ships repositioning, but there are lots of other ships moving around to new locations and providing unique itineraries in the process.
